External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has spoken about increase in India-Russia tradeimbalance, this after five time increase in bilateral goods trade. Jaishankar, currently inMoscow, proposed steps to solidify trade between the two countries and tackle the $58.9 bn trade deficit because of high oil imports from Russia. "Over the last four years, our bilateral trade in goods has increased, as you have noted, more than five-fold from $3 billion in 2021 to $68 billion in 2024-25 and it continues to grow. However, a major trade imbalance has accompanied the growth; it has increased from $6.6 billion to $58.9 billion which is about 9 times. We need to address that urgently," Jaishankar said during India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission.
India and Russia spoke about ways to expand trade between the two counties to ensure long-term supplies of key commodities. S Jaishankar met his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Moscowand he raised Delhi’s concerns about on-tariff barriers, trade deficit, regulatory impediments, and he also spoke about Indians serving in the Russian Army.
“The global context for our meeting today is provided by the evolving geopolitical situation, the shifting economic and trade landscape, and our shared goal is to maximise our complementarity,” Jaishankar said.
Lavrov added, “We see a special importance in our relations as we see the emergence of a new architecture of international relations.”
India on Wednesday successfully test-fired its Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile ‘Agni-5’ from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur in Odisha. The defence ministry said the test-firing of the missile from the Integrated Test Range in Odisha's Chandipur validated all operational and technical parameters.
"Conducted under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command, the launch validated all operational and technical parameters of the missile, marking a significant boost to the country’s strategic deterrence capabilities." the Ministry of Defence said in a statement.
India has at present in its armoury of Agni series,Agni-1 with 700 km range, Agni-2 with 2000 km range, Agni-3and Agni-4 with 2500 km to more than 3500km range. The first test of Agni-5 was conducted on April 19,2012,
